Project - Broadbents
The survey was commissioned to inform an application for a Townscape Heritage Initiative grant to renovate the property, paying particular attention to the roof and façades.
The property is occupied by Broadbents, a family-owned uniform and bridal wear firm located here since 1978.
Since construction (pre-1851) the terrace has been in commercial use. The main entrance to the property was at the corner of the building, but is now incorporated into the flank window display.
Although not listed, considerable architectural value lies in it being one of the more authentic examples of late Georgian commercial buildings on Long Street. Although there is currently no immediate threat to the property there are exciting opportunities for conservation. The property has undergone some reversible alterations and has a significant impact on the streetscape.
We carried out a condition survey of the site and produced a set of measured plans. After assessing the overall condition and developing a repair specification, we produced a cost plan. We helped the client claim grant aid and appoint contractors.
Our role: To manage the contract, helping with valuations of the works, making design decisions to tackle the concealed structural issues, and keeping the team within the tight programme.
Client: Private client
Location: Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
